Coggeshall Town v Heybridge Swifts, 26.09.20

Match Report

The Town return to League duty after a rare two defeats on the trot. The situation was not helped by picking up an unprecedented nine injury’s in the previous three matches, which included key players. Manager Graeme Smith brought Milo Grimes in place of the injured Jack Turner, Aryton Coley and Jack Baker for his first game of the season. Jack had not player any games at all since the final game against Witham Town last March.

Tyler Corlett carried on as Captain in the absence of the injured Tevan Allen. Town kicked towards the Car Park with a strong wind on their backs. They were soon on the attack with Kieran Bailey and Jack Baker pushing forward from mid-field and Harry Critchley making strong runs down the left wing at every opportunity. Nnamdi Nwachuku and Matt Price were giving the Heybridge defence plenty to think about early on, they were being ably supported on the right wing by Ayrton Coley. From fifteen minutes, Heybridge came more into the game but the Coggeshall defence coped well with Tyler Corlett, JJ Wilson and Milo Grimes all keeping a tight reign on the Heybridge forwards. Jack Baker and Matt Price were also helping to cover and help clear the lines on occasions when called upon.

Play was fairly even as the half progressed and both Milo and JJ were able to find the time to make runs forward in support of the mid field players. Midway through the half, Kieran Bailey forced the Heybridge keeper into making two saves; the second shot was a great effort from 22 yards, which was turned around the post in spectacular fashion. On thirty minutes, Jake Jessup made a comfortable save and five minutes later Matt Price cleared the Town lines with a towering header from a Heybridge corner. On 40 minutes Tyler Corlett made a mighty clearance up field that Nnamdi latched on to, he laid the ball off to Kieran Bailey who shot just wide. As half time approached Town were still pushing forward, Matt Price and Ayrton Coley down the right. JJ Wilson and Harry Critchley down the left and Ethan Kessel was starting dictate the game with some great passing to the forwards.

HALF TIME: Coggeshall Town 0 – 0 Heybridge Swifts 0.

AS the second half got under way Town made their first substitution with Max Booth coming on for Kieran Bailey. Max soon settled into the game curling a great free kick into the Heybridge penalty area, which Jack Baker headed just wide. Town continued to press forward with Ayrton Coley, JJ Wilson and Ethan Kessel all keeping the pressure on the Heybridge defence. On fifty-two minutes, Town took the lead as Jack Baker showed great skill in driving home a well-placed Harry Critchley corner from twelve yards out. Three minutes later Frankie Hession – Harris, replaced Jack. He had put in a stirling performance in his first game for six months.

The game continued much as it did in the first half with Town getting forward at every opportunity, Milo and JJ, continued to support the mid-field. Ayrton, Ethan and Max were dominating the mid-field area and on seventy-five minutes, Max fired in a shot from the edge of the box that the Heybridge keeper did well to turn over the bar. Heybridge created a few opportunities during the course of the half but the Town defence stood firm with skipper  Tyler Corlett usually on hand to clear the Town lines and Frankie Hession – Harris playing his part at keeping Heybridge at bay. They had their best chance of the match with a shot on 80 minutes but Town keeper Jake Jessup made a great save diving full length to turn the ball round the post and keep Towns lead intact.

Both Nnamdi and Matt Price had worked tirelessly throughout the game, as did Ethan Kessel. Ethan was fouled on the edge of the Heybridge Penalty area on 90 minutes and Matt stepped up to curl his excellent free-kick through the wall and into the left corner of the Heybridge goal. Matt and all the players celebrated the goal that put the result beyond doubt, giving Town their first League win on the season. It was a great performance from a much-changed side with all the players playing their part. John and Graeme praised the players in their post-match summing up and the fans waited to applaud the players of of the pitch and left the ground contemplating a job well done.
