Match Report

After last weeks disappointing Cup exit, Coggeshall looked to bounce back and continue their impressive start in the league. With Matt Lock returning and Chris Regis making his debut for the clubs, Coggeshall had made serval changes in personal and formation.

Despite looking for a fast start, it was the worst possible beginning for the SeedGrowers. A poor back pass, intended for Ashlee Jones from defender, Ugo Udoji was intercepted by Canvey Island’s Tobi Joseph, as he took a couple of touches around Jones and slotted the ball in to the back of the net to give the visitors the lead after just SEVENTEEN seconds.

As Coggeshall looked for an immediate response, smart play from Ross Wall and Michael Gyasi also provided it, but Gyasi was unable to keep his effort on target as it ballooned over the bar. Gyasi was presented with another chance shortly after following smart play from Tevan Allen however he again missed the target and dragged his shot wide.

After a poor start to the game, Udoji then received the first booking of the contest, as he collected a yellow card for a professional foul in attempts to break up a potentially dangerous counter attack. After some shaky defensive moments, Coggeshall finally found the equaliser that had been looking for. After impressive play down the left wing between George Cocklin and Wall, the later delivered a beautiful cross in to the box.

Midfielder, Conor Hubble arrived in the nick of time, with his powerful diving header bursting through the hands of visiting Goalkeeper, Lemar Johnson and in to the back of the net. On the stroke of half time, Cocklin was then shown a yellow card despite it being his first and only tackle of the first half.

HALF TIME: Coggeshall Town 1-1 Canvey Island

After a positive end to a battling first half between two organised and impressive teams, Coggeshall started the second half and almost took the lead through debutant, Regis. As a long clearance from Dexter Peter caused confusion at the back, Regis almost capitalised and had a clear shot on goal as he rounded Johnson, but a last ditch tackle from Alex Stephenson saved the day for the home side. Moment later, the home side had the ball in the net again as Wall headed home a cross from Hubble, however this time it was chalked off for Wall being in an offside position.

Against the run of play, the visitors almost went ahead again. A cross from the left appeared under control until Udoji lost sight of danger-man, Jason Hallett. With only Jones to beat, Hallett took one touch being unleashing a vicious volley, but somehow Jones was equal to it and pulled off a splendid save to ensure his side remained level. With twenty five minutes left on the clock, the Town made a double change; Aryton Coley and Tom Blackwell were introduced in place of Matt Lock and Chris Regis.

It took only six minutes for the changes to make an impact. Blackwell drove at the visiting defence from his own half, being being fouled inside the Canvey half. Whilst the Referee played advantage, the ball fell kindly to Gyasi. As the defenders watched on, appearing to wait for the Referee’s whistle, Gyasi delivered a cross in to the box on to the head of fellow striker, Wall who planted an impressive header in to the bottom corner to give his side the lead for the first time in the game – 2-1.

After playing a major part in sides second goal, young, Blackwell was in trouble in his own box this time, as he wiped out Sammy Gebrai and the Referee had no choice but to point to the penalty spot, leaving Blackwell with his head in his hands. Up stepped, striker Hallett, who had already been denied by Jones earlier in the afternoon. A powerful penalty from Hallett was SAVED by the outstretched leg of ex Canvey shot-stopper, Jones, to the delight of Blackwell and his team mates – the home side kept their lead in tact.

In the seventh minute of additional time and virtually the last kick of the game, the home side confirmed their victory. A quick counter attack, started by Wall, allowed Coley to run at the visiting defence who were left short in numbers. In unselfish fashion, Coley squared the ball to team mate Gyasi, who took one touch before lifting the ball over the diving Johnson and in to the bottom corner to cap a fine performance from the young striker and to seal the three points!
