Match Report

Coggeshall returned to West Street looking for 3 points following their draw with Great Wakering Rovers last week, but a clash with 5th place Aveley was set to be an exciting game right from the start. With both sides on equal points in the league table, looking to keep up their points per game ratio as we head towards the play-off semi-finals.

With the game kicking off just short of 3 o’clock, the game started off looking promising, as a first minute chance following a run from Nnamdi Nwachuku was saved by Lamar Johnson, followed by an effort from Michael Gyasi’s went just shy of the post. Another chance followed in the next phase of play as a similar action looked set to take the SeedGrowers one nil up just short of 2 minutes, but the Town were unable to capitalise on their energetic start. With Coggeshall constantly on the attack, Aveley appeared confused, as the defenders started to panic with the ball at their feet. Soon after Josh Pollard suffered a head injury following a powerful clearance following a promising attack from Aveley. Just ten minutes in Pollard had left the pitch following the incident, being replaced by Ace Howell.

Several accounts of physical football continued as a wave of fouls heading Coggeshall’s way really slowed play down. In the 31st minute Mekhi McLeod was sent off following an unclear decision by the referee, which was later reported as an incident off the ball involving McLeod and an Aveley player. In the 37th minute a goal was allowed in favour of the visitors, after the linesman assured the referee that a header from Thomas Richardson had crossed the line, despite not appearing to. The half soon came to an end as the last play saw Aveley receive a yellow card after an extremely late tackle on Tyler Brampton.

Half Time: Coggeshall Town 0 – 1 Aveley

As the second half kicked off, Coggeshall were straight back into the flow of things as they proceeded to break down Aveley’s back line, with a fantastic throughb all threading straight past their full back. However, Coggeshall saw yet another chance come and go as they remained fruitless in their attempts to find the back of the net.

Coggeshall conceded yet another questionable decision as two players converged on Curtis Haynes-Brown, yet somehow saw a free kick go against them. Aveley’s second goal looked imminent as ex-Coggeshall striker Sam Bantick came one-on-one with Sambridge, yet Tyler Corlett fantastically charged in, performing an amazing slide tackle to clear any danger.

As the SeedGrowers tried to get back in to the game, they were dealt another hammer blow.As Alexander Akrofi sent a header beyond Danny Sambridge and in to the back of the net, following a counter-attack from Aveley just on the 65 minute mark. Play seemed somewhat uneventful following the goal, as Coggeshall appeared deflated. Despite this, Aveley made the mistake of giving away a free kick in a dangerous position. The talented, Conor Hubble stepped and unleashed a magnificent effort into the top right corner of the goal in the 85th minute. With Coggeshall re-energised, they began to attack the visiting defence again, having several chances saved by Johnson. Despite their efforts with a man deficit, the SeedGrowers unfortunately left the pitch with no points as the referee blew the final whistle, a truly unlucky result.
