Match Report

The Seedgrowers travelled to on form Basildon United last Saturday, who had won their previous three fixtures before the lads travelled to the Core Refurbishments Stadium. With their impressive win streak known, the Town were expecting a spectacle.

The home side were quick out the gates as they put the pressure on early. Basildon’s wingers seemed to glide down the side of the pitch as they broke through on goal within minutes of kick-off. However, the Bees weren’t the only side pushing for a goal as Isaac Skubich hit the crossbar with a lobbed effort. Cafer later faced a blistering strike which was heading towards the top right corner, but a wondeful diving effort from the shotstopper kept the Town in the game. Sam Bantick then saw a close chance glide just inches wide of the post as many Seedgrowers supporters thought their side was about to go one-nil up.

The score was level at the break with both sides failing to convert their efforts within the first forty-five minutes, but following some fantastic football, fans knew that there was opportunity for an exciting second half. The latter period of the game got off to a slower start, as multiple attempts were dealt with swiftly by both team’s defences. Basildon’s tiring front line saw changes made as Brayley made way for Jeremiah as they looked to put on some fresh legs. As the level scoreline loomed over during the second half, both sides began to look to the bench, with the Seedgrowers bringing on Jake Dore and Freddie King, replacing Harry Critchley and Sam Bantick. Aryton Coley was then soon after taken down just inside the penalty area, as a late challenge took his balance away. The Town were awarded a penalty and Milo Grimes stepped up to the plate to take the spot kick. His calm and collected strike hit the back of the net with ease as he sent the Bees goalkeeper the wrong way; and with under 10 minutes to go, the home side were in dire need of an equaliser if they were to scrape a point. A final substitution for the Seedgrowers saw Northwood replace Christian-Law, as the Reds saw out their one-nil lead. Basildon’s Nathan Fuma was then booked for a late challenge at the half way line before the final whistle blew just minutes later. The lads took home a hard foughtthree points as their performance really showed they were the better team on the day.
