Match Report

Coggeshall Town got their pre-season schedule of games off to a flying start with a very impressive win against a strong Colchester United team who featured many young professionals.” The Town” shaped up with one or two new faces in there squad but the team still has the look of last seasons double winning team with all of the players re signing for the upcoming campaign.

The game started at a good tempo as conditions were excellent with the West Street pitch looking as good as it every has after a lot of work has been carried out on it during the off season. Coggeshall slowly worked there way into the game and it wasn’t long before they were getting on the ball and starting to create some good moves. Colchester were also looking dangerous in what was turning out to be a even first half as the game was flowing from end to end. “The Town” we’re looking a threat going forward with Matt Southwell moving the ball round nicely in midfield and Jordan Palmer and Kane Dobrowlski causing the Colchester defenders problems constantly. Coggeshall were keeping it tight at the back to with Nico Farthing and Jon Slater looking very solid at the centre of defence. The Colchester wide players were full of pace but ” The Town’s ” fullbacks Abednego Mensah and Danny Scott kept them quiet. As the first half was drawing to a close Coggeshall were awarded a foul about 25 yards out , Jon Slater stepped up to take the direct freekick and smashed it straight in the top corner giving the Colchester keeper no chance to save. It gave the home team a 1 – 0 lead at half time which is just about what they deserved on the balance of play.

The second half began with both teams making lots of changes. As there was several changes on both teams the play took a while to settle down but it was Coggeshall who adapted better and we’re now looking much more likely to score again with Nnamdi Nwachuku a constant threat to the Colchester back line and Marciel Inacio looking very lively out wide.It was those two players who worked together to create a good opening with Nwachuku putting Inacio through to round the keeper and score but the referee disallowed the goal for a earlier foul. Coggeshall had the majority of the possession in the second half but could not turn it into any more goals but they kept very solid at the other end with Matt Walker in goal rarely tested.

So as the referee brought the game to a end it ended up being a 1 – 0 victory for Coggeshall in what was a very solid performance in front of a good crowd who had come out to support the team. The players will continue there pre season training programme this week in preparation for next weeks tough game at West Street against Ryman League opposition when Brightlingsea Regent are the visitors.
