Coggeshall Town gained another 3 points with a impressive display at West Street against in form Woodbridge Town. Woodbridge arrived at Coggeshall on the back of some excellent results which had propelled them towards the top of the table so ” The Town ” were always going to be in for a tough afternoons work. Pitch conditions were excellent but thick fog in the area was a concern as the match got underway. Both teams started confidently but the home team looked more comfortable on the ball as they started to dictate play early on with Woodbridge looking their most dangerous on the break. Coggeshall started to create as the half went on with George Cocklin and Tom Colville working hard in the midfield area to create space for Matt Southwell to try and unlock the door to give Coggeshall the lead. The first goal came along at the 25 minute mark after Danny Scott broke forward down the right hand side and crossed into the box, the ball was cleared out to Southwell who threaded a great ball through to Tyrone Scarlett who turned inside and delivered a pin point cross for Darren Mills to head home excellently at the far post. On the balance of play it was just what Coggeshall deserved as they had started better.  As the game restarted Coggeshall went looking for a second straight away with Edilson Cruz a real threat on the right wing creating a couple of opportunities but Scarlett and Mills just failed to convert. The same two players combined well though for Coggeshall’s second of the game. This time a cross from Cruz ended up at the feet of Mills who played in his strike partner with a great pass from which Scarlett fired a first time shot into the far corner from 20 yards out with a tremendous strike. That gave ” The Town ” a two goal cushion at the break as the fog came down during the half time interval somewhere left wondering if the game would be completed.

The second half got underway with Woodbridge coming out and giving it their all to try and get back into the game. The visitors had more of the ball during their best spell at the start of the second half but the Coggeshall defence stood firm with Josh Dalziel and Liam Thomas very solid in the centre and both Danny Scott and Matt Rose performing well at full back. Coggeshall weathered the storm well and although Woodbridge had more possession Matt Walker was rarely troubled in the home team’s goal. As Woodbridge started to tire Coggeshall took control of the final stages scoring their third on 75 minutes after Darren Mills never gave up closing the goalkeeper down to force him into a mistake which left Mills a simple tap in for his second of the game. The third goal seemed to finish Woodbridge off and Coggeshall seemed certain to go on and win the game from that point, in fact they managed to score a fourth soon after. It was Mills and Scarlett again causing all the problems, this time Mills was the provider as he played Scarlett in on goal who made no mistake with a great finish from just inside the box. With the last kick of the game Woodbridge scored a consolation goal from a freekick but the result was already decided it was just annoying for Coggeshall that they had given up their clean sheet with such a soft goal.  This meant the final score ended with ” The Town ” winning 4-1 which they fully deserved after a real team effort secured 3 more important points against tough opposition. The club would like to again thank the many supporters who were in attendance from both teams with a good following from Woodbridge at West Street too.

The team are at home again on Boxing Day when local neighbours Halstead Town are the visitors with a 11am kickoff which is sure to be another tough test.

The management, staff and players would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you all on Boxing Day.
