Coggeshall Town took revenge on Wisbech for knocking them out of the league cup at the semi final stage with a convincing 4-0 win at West Street. The result also confirmed the clubs promotion into the Thurlow Nunn League Premier division next season after the last remaining club Woodbridge Town who could have amassed more points than Coggeshall lost at Diss Town making it impossible for them to finish higher than 4th place, meaning the clubs goal of promotion this season has been achieved. The match started with Coggeshall coming out the blocks fast and putting Wisbech on the back foot right from the first whistle. Coggeshall went close to opening the scoring on several occasions with Darren Mills and Tyrone Scarlett looking very dangerous in the ” The Town’s ” frontline. As the half went on the Wisbech defence were struggling to hold out as Josce Syrett and Kamal Guthmy terrorised the visitors defenders with some explosive runs from out wide. The pressure finally told and the deadlock was broken from the penalty spot after 30 minutes. Kamal Guthmy burst into the Wisbech box and was upended from a desperate tackle from a Wisbech defender to give the referee no choice but to award a penalty, Darren Mills stepped up confidently to dispatch the penalty into the bottom corner to give ” The Town ” the lead. Coggeshall continued to dominate for the remainder of the half without adding to the scoreline. The midfield battle was being won for the home team with Henri Okosi and George Cocklin both putting in strong performances.

The second half started with Coggeshall still on the attack with Wisbech offering very little at the other end with Matt Walker a virtual spectator in the home team’s goal. Goal number two soon followed after some more pressure, Guthmy again got away down the left hand side and delivered a cross into the box which ended up in the Wisbech goal with Okosi getting the final touch. Coggeshall were now in total control with Danny Scott and the exciting prospect Tom Colville both getting forward from the fullback areas to join in attacks, leaving the excellent Liam Thomas and Sean Radley to keep things tight at the back. Coggeshall introduced leading goal scorer Nnamdi Nwachuku on the hour replacing Tyrone Scarlett who had performed very well all game. Nwachuku got into gear immediately after his long lay off due to injury and suspension as the visitors backline looked fearful every time he received the ball. It only took Nwachuku 10 minutes on his return to get back on the goal trail after he latched onto a flick on from Jamie Shaw to run at the retreating defenders before bending a great shot into the far corner from 20 yards out. This made the score 3-0 and looked to have made the 3 points safe. There was time for a fourth goal as Darren Mills rounded the keeper to finish well for his second goal of the game and to give Coggeshall a 4-0 lead. This is how the score stayed until the final whistle when it came apparent that results had gone the team’s way elsewhere meaning they had achieved promotion in their first season in the Thurlow Nunn League division 1.

It was a massive reward for the playing squad and management team who have put in so much effort all season long and really stuck together through some tough times. This means the club has had back to back promotions and would like to thank all supporters who have helped the team over the line in recent weeks.

We look forward to seeing as many fans as possible at West Street next Saturday for our final home game of the season against Needham Market to celebrate a very successful season.
