Match Abandoned 53 mins

The top of the table clash between Coggeshall Town and Stowmarket, ended with the match being abandoned after 53 minutes in strange circumstances. On a day when many local games were postponed due to frozen pitches the referee in charge of the game at West Street, deemed the playing surface fit for the match to go ahead. The pitch was actually soft all over apart from one area along the far side touchline which was still quite hard due to frost but the officials gave the match the green light after inspection.

The match got underway at a fast pace with both teams looking to gain an early advantage. After the opening exchanges it was Coggeshall who settled first,  they took control of possession and started to look dangerous when attacking. New signings Jamie Shaw and Kamal Guthmy looked a real handful for the Stowmarket defence as they took their place in the Coggeshall frontline alongside Nnamdi Nwachuku who also looked like he was on top form. The home team were pushing hard to break the deadlock with Tom Colville pulling all the strings in ” The Town ” midfield. The opening goal came around the 20 minute mark after Nnamdi Nwachuku broke away down the left-hand side and played a neat ball into Jamie Shaw who controlled the ball well and then let fly from 25 yards out, the ball hit the crossbar and deflected into the net off the keeper to give Shaw an excellent debut goal. Coggeshall were now in full control and looking likely to add more goals. Goal number Two followed 5 minutes later with Nwachuku and Shaw involved again. This time it was Shaw who was the provider, he held the ball up well and played a nice pass to Nwachuku who cut inside and beat two defenders before sending a shot into the far corner of the net. It was nothing more than ” The Town ” deserved as some of their play had been excellent leading up to the two goals with Stowmarket offering little at the other end. Coggeshall went close again shortly after with a Tom Colville volley from the edge of the box just going wide after a Kamal Guthmy corner. With the half drawing to a close Stowmarket had their best spell forcing Coggeshall back into their own half. The home team defended well to keep the visitors out and Matt Walker had to save well low down to his left to keep the two goal lead intact at the break.

The second half began in a far more even way with both teams coming forward when possible but the game had turned more into a midfield battle. With 53 minutes on the clock their was a tussle between a Coggeshall defender and a player from Stowmarket who both ended up off the pitch. The referee called a halt to proceedings and went to speak to both managers, after several minutes of discussion the referee took the decision to abandon the game as he said a portion of the pitch had become dangerous. The decision left everyone amazed as the playing surface was in no different condition at that point than at the start of play, only the officials will know what drove them to make the decision to call the game off, as it was impossible for the pitch to have deteriorated that much in such a short space of time. It left the Coggeshall Town team frustrated as they seemed in a very good position to have gone on and gained the 3 points. It looks likely that the game will be rescheduled for later in the season. The team are back on the road again next week when they make the short trip to Halstead Town.
