Match Report

Coggeshall Town continued their good start to life in the Thurlow Nunn league with a comfortable win at West Street in a very one sided game. On another very hot day “The Town” dominated right from the kickoff and were far superior to a young Downham team in all departments. After several early attacks the home team went ahead after around 10 minutes after some good play out wide by Tom Monk resulted with him playing in Nnamdi Nwachuku who twisted and turned before finishing well past the Downham Keeper. After that goal it looked like the floodgates would open as Coggeshall looked like scoring every time they went forward but Downham somehow managed to keep the Coggeshall forward players out. Minutes later Coggeshall were awarded a penalty after another great move ended up with Jordan Palmer going through on goal with only the keeper to beat who brought him down as he was about to score. The keeper was booked, but Palmer picked himself up to take the spot kick but missed with the keeper making a save diving away to his right. This was a real let off for Downham as if the second goal would have gone in so soon after the first it would have been looking like a tough afternoon for the visitors. “The Town” continued to dominate the play and kept creating chances with Nwachuku and Monk both going close in the remainder of the first half but they couldn’t find the second goal so the score was still 1-0 at half time.

Coggeshall expected Downham to come out for the second half showing a lot more but that never really happened and the match soon reverted to the same pattern as the first half with Coggeshall taking the game to Downham with the visitors relying on the odd counter attack to try and get the equaliser. Coggeshall kept creating chance after chance but a combination of poor finishing and some good goalkeeping from the visitors keeper managed to keep “The Town” out until the 70 minute mark when the second goal finally came along. This time it was Matt Southwell who was the provider, he got away from his marker with a neat turn and supplied Tom Monk with a superb through ball which Monk finished well to double the home teams lead. It had took a long time to put the game to bed but the second goal seemed to take the fight out of Downham who in truth had been hanging on for the whole game. Coggeshall could have scored more in the final minutes and although disappointed not to have added to there tally went away happy with another victory at the final whistle to leave them unbeaten in there first three games of the new season.

It was a good all round performance with Kane Dobrowlski probably the stand out performer for Coggeshall. The team are on the road again next week with a trip to Needham Market.
