Coggeshall Town gained another 3 vital points in their quest for promotion with a hard fought win over a very motivated Cornard team. The game got underway with Cornard coming out the blocks very fast and taking the game to the home team. The visitors created several openings in the first half but could not find a way past Matt Walker in the Coggeshall goal. Cornard continued to press for a goal as the half went on but ” The Town ” defence led by Liam Thomas stood firm. Things settled down after the first 20 minutes and Coggeshall got a grip on things with Henri Okosi and George Cocklin starting to influence the midfield area and Josce Syrett looking dangerous out wide. As Coggeshall took control of the possession they looked more likely to break the deadlock. Sure enough they took the lead on 35 minutes with a unstoppable strike from George Cocklin from 25 yards with a sweet left foot strike.  This gave the home team a 1 goal lead which they were pleased about after Cornard had made such a good start to the game. The remainder of the half was end to end but no further goals were added for either team so ” The Town ” went in 1 up at the break.

The second half was a bit of a stalemate with both teams trying hard but there wasn’t much quality on show although Coggeshall probably created the best chances with Kamal Guthmy putting in a great second half performance to keep the Cornard defenders busy. The best chance of the half fell to the returning Tom Monk but he failed to convert from close range to put the result beyond doubt. Coggeshall had to defend the final minutes well to keep Cornard out which they did well, in fact they were quite comfortable but with only one goal in it was always a dangerous situation.

The final whistle sounded to the delight of the home team who had managed to secure the win even though it wasn’t one of their most fluent performances. At this time of season it really is the result that matters and the club would like to thank the many supporters who again turned out in force to support the team, it is vital we all stick together during the final weeks of the season as it will be a complete team effort from everyone involved at the club which will get us over the line. The team are at home again Saturday when Holland are the visitors to West Street in what is sure to be another tough match.
