Match Report

Friday night saw a crowd of 1022 pack into West Street to watch Coggeshall Town take on a very good Ipswich Town XI based around there under 21 team. The Coggeshall Town lineup included Olly Murs who was making a guest appearance to add some excitement for the great number of people who had turned out in force to watch the match.

The home teams ground at West Street was looking in fine shape after lots of improvements to the playing surface and stadium over the last few weeks. The teams took to the field and lined up in front of the main stand where they were introduced to the crowd, after this ex England and Ipswich Town captain Terry Butcher was also introduced to the crowd as guest of honour on the night. The game kicked off with a very fast pace being set by the Ipswich players who where moving the ball round at great speed, it took the Coggeshall players several minutes to get used to the quickness of the away teams play but they soon got used to it. Once the game settled down it was Coggeshall who started to look more dangerous with there direct style causing the Ipswich defenders some trouble. Both Coggeshall’s wide players Kane Dobrowlski and Tom Monk were causing the Ipswich back line difficulties and Nnamdi Nwachuku was looking very sharp through the middle. Matt Southwell was looking very comfortable in the Coggeshall midfield where he was using the ball really well to release the forward players. As the half went on Coggeshall hit the woodwork twice, firstly through Monk who shot from just inside the box and secondly from Nwachuku who broke away and shot only for it to come back off the cross bar. Ipswich had chances too at the other end but Matt Walker made a couple of smart saves to deny the away team. The deadlock was broken on 35 mins when Ipswich scored after a nice flowing move involving several players. The goal was probably against the run of play as Coggeshall had been looking more the likely to score. The rest of the half was played out even to give Ipswich a 1 – 0 lead at half time.

The second half began with both teams looking to attack and score the next goal, it was far more end to end. Both goalkeepers had to make saves and there was some last ditch defending by both teams. As the half went on both teams started to make several substitutions when seemed to slow the game down a bit. After 60 minutes Olly Murs came on to the field for Coggeshall replacing Jordan Palmer who had played very well throughout and had caused lots of problems for the Ipswich back line. As the game continued Coggeshall had a spell of pressure which led to the equaliser from Nnamdi Nwachuku. A throw came into Nwachuku who drew 3 Ipswich defenders towards him, he managed to wriggle free and break away to shoot from just outside the box and find the bottom corner of the net, it was no more than he deserved as he had been a constant threat to the Ipswich defenders all game. Both teams had further chances to score with Olly Murs having a shot from distance for the home team but he unfortunately dragged it wide. The game closed out to a draw which was a bit harsh on Coggeshall as on the balance of play they should of won the match.

They had many stand out performers with Nico Farthing looking very solid at the back and Matt Southwell very influential in midfield. It turned out to be a great night for the club with the many fans in attendance going home happy after watching such a good match with plenty of quality on display. The teams carry on there pre-season schedule when local rivals Witham Town visit West Street next Saturday.

The club would like to thank all those who helped out on the night to make the event such a success. Coggeshall Town would also like to thank Ipswich Town for sending a team to West Street, Olly Murs for his continued support to the club, Chelmsford Plastic Warehouse and Studio Link 11 for sponsoring the event.
