Match Report

Coggeshall extended their lead at the top of the table with a hard fought away win at Braintree. The team arrived at Braintree looking to continue their good run of form, pitch conditions were good and as usual ” The Town” had brought plenty of support with them.

The game started at a good pace with Coggeshall playing some great football right from the first whistle which led to them taking a early lead. With only three minutes on the clock Tom Monk broke away down the right hand side and played a pass into Tyrone Scarlett who returned the ball to Monk who crossed into the box where Nnamdi Nwachuku was on hand to finish well from close range to put the visitors one up. It was a great start for Coggeshall, but the lead only lasted a short while as Braintree equalised after after the referee awarded them a freekick which they scored from the rebound after Matt Walker had made a great save to level things up at 1-1. The equalising goal did not stop Coggeshall from going forward and they created several chances to go back in front with Tyrone Scarlett and Tom Colville both going close. It was the home team who actually took the lead against the run of play when they scored from a corner after some slack marking from Coggeshall. The goal put ” The Town ” behind in a game which is something they had not been used to in recent weeks and it looked like they would need a big performance to turn things around as Braintree were now very motivated after going in front. The game was end to end now with the next goal always going to be important and it was Coggeshall who scored it. This time it was Tyrone Scarlett who was the provider after a decent run which took him past two Braintree defenders he played Tom Monk in on goal who finished with a excellent strike to level things up just before the break.

At half time the teams went in even at 2-2 in what had been a very entertaining  first half.Coggeshall came out of the blocks well at the start of the second half and started to take the game to the home team with Matt Southwell having a real influence in midfield. After some sustained pressure ” The Town” went ahead after 65 mins after Nwachuku and Tom Colville combined well to put Danny Scott through who finished at the far post after a determined run. Coggeshall now looked comfortable and goal number four soon followed this time it was a excellent ball forward from Matt Rose to Monk who got the wrong side of his defender and then cut in to unleash a powerful strike which flew into the top corner giving the keeper no chance. This made the score 4-2 to Coggeshall and their only looked like one winner at this stage.Just as it looked like ” The Town ” could start to relax a mistake at the back allowed Braintree to pull a goal back which gave them something to fight for with the final whistle approaching. Coggeshall didn’t panic though and still kept going forward in search of another goal to put the result beyond doubt and they got it in the final minutes with Nwachuku scoring his second of the game to compete the scoring and make the final 5-3 to the away team.It was a valuable 3 points after a really hard fought performance , the team showed real character and spirit to come back after the early setback.

Their was several great individual displays with Matt Southwell and Tom Colville who was making his first start for the club excellent in midfield. Tom Monk and Nnamdi Nwachuku both scoring two goals on the day also caught the eye.The team are on the road again next week as they visit Stowmarket who currently sit behind Coggeshall in the league in second place.
