Match Report

Coggeshall Town came in to this match on the back of an impressive point away from home against at the time, league leaders Aveley. Boss, Graeme Smith decided to keep the same starting eleven as last Saturday, as new signing Aryton Coley took his place on the substitutes bench.

On an extremely cold and eventually wet afternoon, the SeedGrowers had a tough opening to the match as Great Wakering Rovers came out of the blocks quickly, as Coggeshall struggled to string a succession of passes together. It was the home side however who created the first chances of the afternoon, as Tevan Allen score his effort from the edge of the box go over the bar before Ross Wall headed a cross from Sam Bantick side of the goal. Danny Sambridge was then called in to action for the first time in the game, as he flung himself in the air to make a smart save to deny Great Wakering midfielder, Billy Johnson. Wakering then had another chance to opening the scoring from a corner, however they were wasted a clear opportunity to the delight of the Coggeshall defenders.

The SeedGrowers then punished their opponents as they created a goal out of nothing. George Allen’s long pass was chased down by Sam Bantick and it looked to be a lost cause, however the work rate of Bantick created confusion between the Goalkeeper and his defender. Bantick’s initial effort was saved by the Goalkeeper, but at the second attempt Bantick was able to open his account with a headed effort in to an empty net. The home side had the final chance of the first half, however a diving same from Wakering’s goalkeeper denied a Bantick freekick which looked destined for the bottom corner.

Half Time: Coggeshall Town 1-0 Great Wakering Rovers

During the interval, the rain began to hammer down as the forecast predicted resulting in the conditions being extremely difficult for both sets of players. At the beginning of the half, it was Gary Kimble’s side who had three good opportunities to level the affair. However, Wakering came up against Sambridge who was having a fine afternoon, as a superb diving save followed by an even better double save ensured he prevented Wakering from scoring.

Just like the first half, Coggeshall punished the  away side for not taking their chances. As Ross Wall played a forward pass to Conor Hubble, it looked like the Wakering defence had things under control – but Hubble had other ideas. The impressive midfielder shielded the ball from three defenders, before unleashing a right footed effort across the goal in to the bottom corner of the net for the game’s second goal of the game, to shed some daylight between the two sides.

Correy Davidson then had a chance of his own, inside the penalty area however the conditions resulted in Davidson slipping on his backside as Wakering cleared away any danger. As Coggeshall continued to dominate the second half, they put the match result beyond any doubt as they scored their third goal of the afternoon. As sub, Nnamdi Nwachuku dribbled away from the chasing defenders, he played an amazing pass to Tevan Allen, who delivered an inviting cross on to head of Ross Wall who calmly headed the ball in to the bottom corner to complete the scoring for the afternoon.
