Match Report

Coggeshall Town started their campaign back in The FA Vase after an absence of over 30 years. The team had a tough draw to kick off with after they were drawn away at Clacton in the first qualifying round. Coggeshall arrived at Clacton on a blustery day to find the playing surface in very poor condition which was always going to make things tough to get a result. Coggeshall made one change to their lineup with George Cocklin coming in for his first start of the season after a lengthy suspension replacing the injured Correy Davidson. Coggeshall got off to a good start and had the better of the opening exchanges. The visitors had plenty of possession but didn’t create any clear cut chances in the first half, they had to rely on a couple of half chances from Kamal Guthmy and Conor Hubble to try and force the opening goal but neither could score from long range. At the other end Clacton didn’t threaten ” The Town ” goal and spent the majority of the first half defending. The scores were level at the break.

The second half started with Coggeshall on top again with Jamie Shaw and Nnamdi Nwachuku both looking a handful for the Clacton defence. The visitors were still dominating possession but chances were hard to come by as Clacton defended resolutely to keep the scores level. As the match drew to a close it was Clacton who nearly managed to win the game as they broke away to hit the bar with a shot from just outside the box. After that near miss Coggeshall seemed satisfied to take the game to extra time. The final whistle went and both teams looked tired as the match went into 30 minutes of extra time with penalties to follow if neither team could break through.

Coggeshall looked like they had more left in the tank in extra time as they attacked the Clacton defence on numerous occasions with the home team hanging on to stay in the game. The Clacton keeper made a couple of good saves to keep out efforts from Aaron Cosgrove and Nnamdi Nwachuku as Coggeshall continued to press. Coggeshall finally broke through after Danny Scott burst forward to deliver a cross to the far post were Nwachuku was on hand to volley home from close range to give ” The Town ” the lead. The teams had a quick turnaround as they went into the second half of extra time. The goal had all but killed off the Clacton challenge as Coggeshall continued to go forward in search of a second goal. The second goal came again from Nwachuku who cut inside to score with a great finish low into the far corner to seal the victory with 5 minutes remaining. As the final whistle sounded Coggeshall were left feeling pleased as they had progressed into the next round putting in a hard fought team performance in tough conditions. The club would like to thank all their followers who made the trip to Clacton to support the team and special mention goes to Russell Runnacles who made the long journey from Northumberland to support the team in their return to FA Vase action. Coggeshall are rewarded with another tough tie in the next round with a trip to Essex Senior League team Redbridge.
