Coggeshall Town U11s Match Reports
Sunday 24th January.
Little Oakley 1 - 6 Coggeshall Town
Coggeshall came away clear winners of this fixture. However, the score line does not paint a clear picture
of the match itself. Coggeshall went one up after a great through ball where Laney could show his pace and produced
a cool finish within the first minute of the whistle being blown. Little Oakley bounced straight back after a very
well taken penalty. This came about by some excellent work by the Little Oakley winger.
Coggeshall then took full control of the match when Lane scored another three goals from quality through balls and calm
finishing. After a penalty miss from Ben, his blushes were saved for the half time team talk by coming up with a goal
scored from a very acute angle after a driven run into the oppositions box.
All credit to the coaching staff and the players at Little Oakley as second half they came out and put the Coggeshall
boys under some pressure. It took a great save by Sam and an unfortunate but correct offside flag near the end of the
half to halt any further progress on their goals scored.
Some great saves and brave blocks by the Little Oakley keeper stopped the Coggeshall boys from scoring any further
goals until the last 10 minutes where the goal of the game was produced. Under pressure from the attacking force, centre
defenders Lee and Robert calmly created a couple of one two passes, the ball was passed to Luke in the midfield area.
With one touch he turned his player and slipped a slide-rule pass to Lewis, who, under pressure, kept his feet and lobbed
the on-rushing keeper from outside the box. A superb goal to end a great game of football made better by both teams and
their supporters alike.
Sunday 13th December
Cornard Dynamos 1 - 3 Coggeshall Town
A difficult game for the boys but a hard-fought victory that was needed as Coggeshall's top-four rivals all won. Following a lengthy lay-off it was perhaps predictable that it wasn't going to be pretty and the side reached the break one down. As the second half wore on however, Coggeshall found their feet and with the midfield, led by the tireless Luke, playing several through balls, the visitors found themselves in the lead with a brace from Ben. This seemed to trigger something of a panic though and it was nervous end to the match, but one that saw a long ball over the defence for the third and clinching goal from Trademark.
MoM: Luke
Cobwebs blown away and Holiday Weight yet to don, the boys hopefully will be up to the task of avenging the second of only 2 defeats this season, when they host Long Melford on Sunday.
Sunday 22nd November 2009
Coggeshall Town 2 - 1 Heybridge Youth
Football is a game of opinions and this game has clearly divided opinions since the final whistle.
But what cannot be argued is that in a robust encounter on Sunday Coggeshall cancelled out their opening day loss to
Heybridge with a win at Crops.
Coggeshall went a goal up playing up the slope and into the wind. Good work all round from Brownie who started and finished
a right-sided move involving Mat and BenL. All-in-all this was a good half from Coggeshall who dealt with the long ball
well.
This was the score at halftime and Coggeshall made no changes as the second half started.
There was some good link-up play from the homesters, however it was a soft penalty that allowed Heybridge to equalise.
But not to be denied Coggeshall scored the second, again from Brownie but this time through good work on the left from Rio.
This long distance strike had the home support smiling. There were some late scares as Heybridge tried to salvage a point
but at the final whistle the Coggeshall players were as happy and the visitors as disappointed, as a result between two top
sides merits.
So the race for potential promotion places appears now to be between the current top four and it will be interesting to see
who has the character to prevail.
No game this coming Sunday for Coggeshall, but Heybridge have another tough game as they host Frinton & Walton, while
Long Melford travel to Cornard.
8th November 2009
Coggeshall Town 6 - 3 Brooklands
We all know that football arouses strong emotions, but for two people on Sunday it was clearly a struggle to keep those
emotions in check. . . . yep, for Tom and Matt scoring their first goals for Coggeshall must have brought a tear to their
eyes.
It was another stroll for Coggeshall in this rearranged fixture, brought forward after both sides had been knocked out of
the cup a few weeks earlier. Playing the same side again in such quick succession rarely sees an improved win but Coggeshall
will take a three-goal margin as they closed on the top three who were all in cup action.
There were changes soon after the start and also just before the end of the first half in both the home and Officials team,
as first Lee was moved into the middle of the park when Trademark exited early through illness and Mike later reprised his
Ref's role in the fading sunshine.
Lee did not waste this opportunity to play in his favoured position as he capped a man of the match performance with two
goals, and Mike showed he hadn't lost it . . . .
Earlier, Upfront and Flukey had rounded off good moves when finding the target and there was time later for Matt and Tom to
put the game beyond doubt. At the back Rob caught the eye with a commanding performance and there was a growing understanding
with Will. But you don't end a match happily without remaining calm and collected so well done to all the reds and . . . . .
Brooklands flickered fleetingly for free goals (too many F's on the day. Ed.) but there was never much doubt about the result
and most went to the car park chatting quietly and contentedly.
Player's MoM: Lee Rose
There's a top of the table clash this Sunday when Frinton & Walton host Long Melford and an opportunity for either or both
to drop points. We travel to Oyster Youth with a chance therefore to close a bit further.
1st November 2009
Brooklands 0 - 9 Coggeshall Town
Did anyone notice it was wet on Sunday? Coggeshall didn't seem to as they ran out easy winners on their visit to Brooklands.
The only down side to the day was Rio's nose bleed and those whose boiler timers were on the blink and so couldn't have hot
showers when they got home.
A four goal advantage at half-time, through Upfront (2) TradeMark and Flukey, was well deserved and highlighted Brooklands
problem with pace at the back.
Changes all round in the second half led to more of the same as with the wind at their backs, Coggeshall pressured the home
side time and time again. TradeMark got another, wind-assisted, from a more acute angle and Upfront completed his hattrick
before an own goal had made it seven. Upfront finished off a WillP shot which had become becalmed in the pond immediately
in front of goal, amid claims of offside which could only have been against the duck. WillP was not to be denied however as
he and Upfront switched roles for him to score his first since records began. Well my records anyway.
Throughout, the defence was solid and the midfield played well, but it was a day for looking up top.
Men of the match: BenL & WillP
Next weekend sees the same opposition but this time at Crops, in a rearranged match brought forward as neither of us are in
cup action. Our conquerors, Lexden Saints visit Bures United, another A league club, in the second round of the cup.
25th October 2009
Coggeshall Town 6 - 3 Little Oakley Reds
Coggeshall raced into a two goal lead as they experimented with a new formation on Sunday. This didn't stop Rio's
resurgent scoring boots from giving the homesters the lead which Up Front Ben added to. Our visitors replied with a
freekick which found its way into the net somehow but Coggeshall held the advantage at the break.
Sitting back at the start of the second half and inviting pressure, Coggeshall soon found themselves pegged back level
and so the experiment was postponed. With business as usual at the back, Coggeshall were more confident and soon restored
the advantage through big Ben with what is becoming his trademark freekick. Good work in the middle by Will saw Matt
released out wide from where his cross was converted by UF Ben for 4-2. He duly completed his hatrick when he slotted home
a penalty, perhaps harshly awarded when BB went over in the box after a shoving match with a defender.
Coggeshall's half dozen was complete as the home keeper donned his Paul Robinson boots and, what are the chances, badly
missed a back pass which had hit the head of a surfacing mole on the way through . . . honest, it did, coach!
There was a second half consolation for Little Oakley when it seemed an entirely different defensive experiment was
unilaterally decided upon, but in truth the result was not in doubt after the lead was restored.
Man of the match: BenB
The coming weekend sees the first match of a league/cup double-header against Brooklands.
18th October 2009
Frinton & Walton 4 - 4 Coggeshall Town.
A good performance against free scoring F&W and probably a fair result in the end.
In a competitive match, Coggeshall took the lead as Rio forced home a fumble by the home keeper. With a nod to the
goalkeepers union, Sam saw a ball get big on him and the equaliser bounced over the line. Ben flicked Coggeshall into
the lead only for it to be pegged back again amidst good competitive performances in the middle from the other Ben and Luke.
At the back poorly Lee battled on, ably assisted by a fantastic performance from Rob.
Middle Ben restored the Coggeshall lead with a big free kick and the win seemed to be sealed when Up Front Ben sprinted
through for his second and his side's fourth with 8 minutes to go.
A slight drop in intensity coupled with the home side pushing for all they were worth meant that F&W to their credit were
able to equalise and so preserve their unbeaten record, but they were pushed very close.
A very good comeback from the disappointment of the previous week and this match means we have now played the top
three while they still have each other to face.
Man of the match: Rob
Sunday 11th October (League Cup)
Lexden Saints 8-0 Coggeshall Town
At the end of Sunday's game, the mother of a Lexden Saint's player is reported to have asked in what league we had
played last season, as it was her opinion that we were better than the sides they had faced in the A League so far this
term. Perhaps she was taking the mick, or perhaps the league should be worried about how it streamed teams for the step up
to the full-sized game. Perhaps she was taking Thumper's advice "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"
but it wasn't in her nature to keep quiet.
Whatever, for perhaps only 15 minutes this match was a contest as Coggeshall travelled to Stanway School to face in-form
Lexden Saints in the first round of the league cup. But for the remainder of the match it was the home side who dominated
in all areas as Coggeshall's passing game deserted them and it was deep in to the second half before their keeper was
called upon to field a shot on target. In the meantime Lexden had scored several and but for man-of-the-match Sam, they
could have had several more.
It's not unusual at this time of year to read of extra-curricula lessons, and were it not for Sam on Sunday this test may
well have been 11-plus. The Coggeshall skipper merited a distinction for his efforts in goal, despite the scoreline.
If there has been a comment lately that these reports mask the reality, there can be no escaping the truth this time as
Lexden handed out the first real caning of our players' young careers.
Lexden, boasting several professionally coached players, were simply faster, stronger and technically more able than our
lads and so the result was perhaps predictable. What was perhaps more surprising was that our players couldn't rise to the
challenge.
So there are lessons to be identified, developed and learnt in short order as we visit an equally in-form Frinton & Walton
team this coming weekend. Looking further ahead, there is also clearly a level to aspire to.
Sunday 4 October 2009
Long Melford 1 - 0 Coggeshall
Suffolk Punch
Coggeshall's first foray into our neighbouring county was not a pleasant experience, on or off the pitch. The home club
made the visit uncomfortable in many respects and it will not be remembered fondly by anyone who made the trip.
For the team it was a disappointing match with memories of the opening game against Heybridge recalled to mind. A poor
start with a goal conceded in the opening five minutes and a head injury to poor old Jack was not ideal and a calm team-talk
at half time was called for.
The players responded well and chances were created in the second half but with no luck, and when two good calls for
penalties were waved away it was clear there would be no joy today.
If there were any bright points to a dismal outing it was Ben's terrorising of the home defence and a brilliant
man-of-the-match performance from Luke whose display of tireless running, strength, touches of skill and overall
determination should be an example for all to aspire to in the return.
Man of the match: Luke
Matches like this will come along more frequently and it will be interesting to see how the players respond both in the
next game in a, hopefully, more friendly atmosphere, and in the corresponding fixture at Crops at the end of December.
They have a history of adapting to whatever is thrown at them.
The next game is away in the first round of the League Cup on Sunday. The Lexden Saints club has a good pedigree and their
u11 side has been strengthened by at least a couple of good quality additions over the close season, so the match will be
a test for our lads. But this is why we switched leagues, to play new and stronger clubs and to see just how good are this
talented bunch.
Sunday 27 September 2009
Coggeshall 4 - 0 Cornard Dynamos Reds
A upa ne ka up ane, whiti te ra!
Coggeshall's equivalent of the Haka set the scene for a comprehensive win at Crops for the second successive weekend.
Ka ora, ka mate it wasn't, but it was enough to distract the visitors as their coaches struggled to get their team focussed.
It took a while for the boys to settle but soon a controlled midfield was moving the ball out wide in typical Coggeshall
fashion and a calm back four was holding their line.
With such a solid platform behind them, the more attacking players soon made their presence felt and it wasn't long before
Ben coolly did what Ben does and put the home side ahead with a calm finish after linking up with big Ben and Matt.
A strong run down the left flank from Lewis finished with his left, sandwiched a debut goal from Patrick who continues to
amaze with his array of tricks and so Coggeshall made it to the break 3 goals to the good.
With the team performing so well front to back it was difficult to make changes, but that's what the boss isn't paid for
and there was the sound of tinkering.
Again it was a few minutes before the lads settled, playing up the slope in the second half.
Chances were created from both flanks as subs Tom and Rio out paced their opponents, while at the back there was little of
any note for Sam and his defence to worry about with probably only a single shot on goal to field. Lee and Robert continued
to cement their central defence partnership and Jack, Will and Thomas are growing into their roles with no dramas.
In the middle Luke and Ben covered every inch and each will qualify soon for the "good engine" moniker to compliment their
passing ability. Ben also showed he can take players on, as he skipped past a couple and planted one high into the top
corner for Coggeshall's fourth.
Further changes were made later in the half and with chances for both Willo and Lewis the victory could well have been more
comprehensive, but a second successive clean-sheet was just as important.
Great performances from all over the park meant that it was impossible to single-out any one player and so the
man-of-the-match is awarded to the entire squad.
At the end, parents and friends were appreciative in their applause as the boys started their warm-down and behind the
broad smiles, Paul and Dave could reflect on a job well done and vindication of the work put in at training. There's also
the suspicion that the Coggeshall Haka may become a permanent part of the warm-up once more.
Two games now which should bring every confidence going into next week's visit to unbeaten Long Melford Blues
Sunday 20th September 2009
Coggeshall 5 - 0 AFC Sudbury
Whoever said that boys don't listen? There was a superb reaction to the previous week's limp loss to Heybridge,
as Coggeshall strode past AFC Sudbury on Sunday to record their first win in their new league.
With enough chances throughout the team to compensate for last week's dearth, it was Luke and Lewis who fired Coggeshall
in front and forward Ben who completed a fine second-half hat-trick in a 5-0 whitewash of our Suffolk opposition.
Lewis, playing out of position, relished the chance to use the space on the left wing as he covered for the injured Rio.
For a grateful Ben there was a welcome back to Luke and between them they covered many-a-mile in dictating midfield control.
Behind them, there was a clean-sheet for Sam and the defence, led well as usual by Lee.
From Patrick, playing his first league game since his premature retirement in October last year, there was a man-of-the-match
performance up front. His speed of thought, darting runs, link-up play and ball control were all appreciated by his teammates.
Luke's opener, scored with a borrowed boot, was a) an exquisite lob from Beckham-range, or b) a Flukey-Lukey punt with a
wing and a prayer, delete as appropriate, though I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and Lewis tapped-in the
second via Ben, after fine work from Tom Twin down the right.
Ben's three goals were finished in typical fashion with the first coming again from the right, this time from his namesake
in midfield, the second the result of a super slide-rule pass from Lee and the third an unstoppable blast into the top corner.
All in all it was a good performance from the team, warmly applauded at the end by the parents. From a coaching perspective
it was very pleasing for us to see the players responding so well to the sessions that separated the two games.
Man of the match: Patrick
Next Sunday sees the visit of Cornard Dynamos to Crops and the alumnus travels to Peterborough.
Sunday 13th September 2009
Heybridge 3 - 0 Coggeshall
A rusty performance from the boys was punished with a defeat in the first game of the new season on Sunday.
Missing Luke to illness and a few others due to late registrations, Coggeshall were able to list just one sub
on what was their first competitive foray into the large-format game.
On a hard pitch and with typically-windy conditions next to the Basin, Coggeshall struggled to get their usual
passing game going and chances were few and far between. If Heybridge were perhaps a tad lucky to take the lead,
their second goal was well crafted with a good cross and half-volley finish however.
Despite half-time encouragement from the manager, the second-half was scrappy and notable only for fine defensive
work from Lee and excellent saves from Sam between the posts. The visiting stopper could do nothing with a penalty
late-on however and the final score was fair.
Man of the match: Lee.
This Sunday sees the visit of AFC Sudbury and a chance to build bridges after the events of their Summer tournament.
The team will also have the opportunity, with a full squad, to make amends for a bad day at the Basin. The manager
will be looking for a positive, hard-working response.
